A tummy tuck, like a buttock lift, is an invasive surgical procedure carried out under general anaesthesia and usually takes between two and four hours, depending on the extent of the operation.

Before the procedure itself, you will have a thorough consultation with a plastic surgeon, who will assess the condition of your skin, the amount of excess skin, and any diastasis of the abdominal muscles, and will work with you to plan the optimal surgical technique.

The day before the operation, we will contact you to go through the final instructions. You should arrive at the clinic having fasted and wearing comfortable clothing. Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by our team, and a final consultation will take place with the anaesthetist and the surgeon, who will mark the area to be operated on. You will then be taken to the operating theatre, where the anaesthetist will put you to sleep.

The operation itself begins with an incision, usually made in the area above the pubic bone, similar to a caesarean section. The surgeon will remove sagging skin and subcutaneous fat from the area between the navel and the lower abdomen. They will then tighten the loosened abdominal muscles by suturing the muscle fascia to create a firm and flat abdomen.

Finally, the skin is tightened, any excess skin is removed, and the wound is carefully closed with stitches or special surgical glue.

Once the operation is complete, we will transfer you to the post-operative ward, where our team will monitor you closely. After you wake up from the anaesthetic, you may feel some pressure and mild pain in your abdomen, which we will manage with painkillers.

You will remain at the clinic for the first day or two under the supervision of doctors to ensure your safety and to enable a swift response should any complications arise.

The first week after the operation is the most challenging. You will experience swelling; you may also develop bruises and feel mild pain, which can be relieved with the prescribed medication.

It is important to walk upright with a slight forward lean, as this reduces strain on the scar and speeds up healing. Short daily walks are recommended from the second day onwards to prevent blood clots.

You must wear compression garments continuously for four to six weeks. These garments support healing, reduce swelling and help the skin adapt to the new shape of your abdomen. We do not recommend taking baths for at least six weeks.

After the first week, you can return to light activities and undemanding office work, provided you feel well. After four weeks, you can gradually start moderate physical activity, such as brisk walking.

You may only resume intensive sport and abdominal exercises after two to three months, following consultation with your doctor.

The scar will initially be red and prominent, which is entirely normal. Over the course of the first year, it will gradually fade and become less noticeable.

Regular check-ups are an essential part of a successful recovery. The first check-up usually takes place on the second or third day after the operation, when the doctor checks how the wound is healing and removes any drains if necessary.

The next check-up takes place seven to ten days later, when the stitches are removed or the condition of the self-dissolving stitches is checked.

One month after the operation, the condition of the scar and the overall result are assessed. After three months, we evaluate the final result and approve a return to full physical activity.

In the long term, we recommend follow-up appointments at six months and one year to assess the long-term outcome.
