Areola reduction

Areola reduction requires precise surgical technique and an eye for aesthetic proportions. At Premier Clinic, we combine the expertise of our plastic surgeons with state-of-the-art equipment to achieve the perfect result.

• Experienced surgeons with many years’ practice – Our plastic surgeons have a decade’s experience in breast surgery and other plastic and cosmetic surgical procedures. They perform hundreds of successful operations every year. Their experience guarantees a natural result with minimal scarring.
• An outpatient procedure with a short duration – The entire procedure takes just 30 minutes. You’ll be able to go home the very same day without needing to stay in hospital. If you combine the procedure with breast reshaping or augmentation, the operation will take around 1.5 to 2 hours under general anaesthesia, with discharge the following day.
• Gentle anaesthesia method – Local anaesthesia is usually sufficient for areola reduction. When combined with breast reshaping, we use gentle low-flow anaesthesia with premium gas, which means an easier recovery and virtually no unpleasant side effects.
• Option to combine with other procedures – We can perform areola reduction on its own or in combination with breast reduction, breast augmentation or cosmetic procedures for breasts after breastfeeding. A single procedure can therefore address several issues at once.
• Quick recovery – After two weeks, we will remove the gauze and plaster, and you can return to your normal activities. We recommend compression massages and moisturising creams to minimise and lighten scars. You can resume sporting activities after three weeks.
• Natural-looking results – The surgeon will adjust the size of the areolas to suit the proportions of your breasts and your figure. The result is harmoniously balanced areolas that look natural. The scar remains inconspicuous around the edge of the areola and fades over time.

Preliminary consultation – Before the operation, you will have a consultation with a plastic surgeon. They will measure the size of your areolas, assess the shape and proportions of your breasts, and suggest the ideal new size. If you are planning to become pregnant, they will advise you to wait until after you have finished breastfeeding. It is advisable to have a breast ultrasound scan before the procedure to rule out any changes in the breast tissue.

The procedure – The course of the procedure depends on whether you are combining it with another operation. Stand-alone areola reduction is carried out under local anaesthetic, whilst combined procedures usually require general anaesthesia.

The surgeon will mark the new size of the areola directly on the skin. They will remove the excess skin around the edge and close the wound with absorbable sutures. These will dissolve on their own during the healing process, so you won’t need to have the stitches removed. A scar remains around the circumference of the areola and, once healed, will almost blend in with the transition between the areola and the surrounding skin.

If you combine areola reduction with other procedures – such as correcting breast asymmetry or surgery for inverted nipples – the surgeon will carry out everything during a single operation. This saves you from having to undergo a second anaesthetic and a second recovery period.

Once the procedure is complete, the surgeon will cover the wound with a sterile plaster and gauze. You will be given detailed instructions on aftercare at home. If the procedure was carried out under local anaesthetic, you can go home within an hour. Following general anaesthetic, you will remain at the clinic for observation, usually until the following day.

For the first two weeks, you should wear a dressing and disinfect the wound every other day, applying the disinfectant only to the surface. After 14 days, the gauze is removed and you can wash your breasts as normal.

You will begin pressure massages to minimise scar formation and gradually lighten the scar. Moisturising creams applied to the areola area will speed up healing.

Most patients return to work after a few days. You should avoid sport, saunas and swimming for at least three weeks. You should wear a special bra as recommended by your surgeon – usually for two to four weeks to ensure optimal healing and shape.
