The operation is carried out under general anaesthesia and lasts approximately 1–1.5 hours. Incisions approximately 4 cm long are made beneath the breasts, as directed by the doctor, to allow the implant to be inserted.
These are inserted either beneath the pectoral muscle or beneath the mammary gland. In other, less common cases, the implant is inserted via an incision in the armpit or around the areola. This depends on the patient’s physical characteristics and the desired outcome.
Drains are inserted into the operated area; over the course of 24 hours, these help to drain blood and tissue fluid more effectively, are an important factor in promoting faster healing, and help to reduce inflammation. Once the implants have been inserted, the incisions are closed with absorbable sutures.
Following the procedure, the patient is fitted with a supportive elastic bra to secure the implants and is admitted to hospital for 1–2 days as required. After a check-up and the removal of the drains, the patient is discharged to recover at home, following the doctor’s instructions.
