Dr Martin Chorvát – An experienced, certified surgeon who also practises at the Královské Vinohrady Plastic Surgery Clinic. In addition, he teaches future doctors at the Third Faculty of Medicine, Charles University. He began his career in the Department of Plastic Surgery at the T. Bata Hospital in Zlín, where he also gained valuable experience in the field of traumatology. He now lives and works in Prague.

In most cases, the compressed nerve is released using the so-called ‘open’ technique, which results in a scar of varying size on the palm.

Traditional carpal tunnel surgery is carried out under local anaesthesia, during which the surgeon makes a longitudinal incision in the palm to sever the transverse ligament in the wrist, thereby releasing the structures within the carpal tunnel, including the compressed nerve.

The operation takes around 30 minutes, and significant pain relief can be expected within 1 to 2 days.

Immediately after the operation, you must keep your hand still, clean and dry (for approximately 1 to 2 days).

During the day, keep your arm in a fabric sling and at night, prop your arm up with a pillow. The recovery period depends on the physical demands of your job (from 2 weeks to 12 weeks).
