How will the procedure be carried out?

Chin plastic surgery is carried out under general anaesthesia and requires a post-operative hospital stay of approximately 2 days. The procedure itself depends on the specific issue being addressed and its location.

For chin reduction, an incision is made inside the lower lip. By retracting the soft tissues, the chin protrusion is exposed; the excess tissue is removed using a burr, and the chin is then reshaped. The wound is closed with absorbable sutures.

If an asymmetrical chin is being treated, the procedure is the same, except that the chin process is filed down to the desired symmetrical shape and the incision is sutured. In cases of more severe asymmetry, part of the chin must be removed; the exposed bone is repositioned and reshaped using a bone drill. The wound is sutured and secured with a compression plaster for approximately 5 days.

Chin augmentation surgery is performed using an implant or by repositioning the patient’s own bone.

The procedure is carried out via an incision beneath the inner part of the lip, where a suitable implant (we use an implant that possesses invaluable properties – it integrates with the surrounding bone and gradually supplements the bone tissue) is secured to the bone with titanium screws to prevent displacement, and the wound is sutured with absorbable stitches. The advantage is that the implant can be shaped as required.

When repositioning the patient’s own bone, an incision is made in the lower oral mucosa; the soft tissues are retracted and the lower jaw exposed, a section of the chin is cut away; the freed section is repositioned into the desired shape, secured with a small titanium splint and screws, and stabilised with a compression dressing.

What about recovery after the procedure?

Following the procedure, the treated area may experience increased tenderness or swelling, which can be alleviated with standard painkillers and cold compresses. The swelling usually subsides within about 14 days; however, if the jawbone has been repositioned or the angle of the lower jaw has been altered, the swelling may persist for slightly longer.

Chin plastic surgery requires a hospital stay of approximately 1–3 days, followed by post-operative care at home, which involves rest and a soft diet for about a week until the wounds have healed.

It is also advisable to improve oral hygiene and rinse the mouth with sage, mint or chamomile. When correcting chin asymmetry, the area must be immobilised with plasters for approximately 7 days; if non-absorbable sutures have been used, these are removed after approximately 10 days.

Chin plastic surgery requires a reduction in physical activity for 2–4 weeks, after which the patient returns to their normal work and personal routine. After the procedure, it is important to avoid any impact to the lower jaw.

What are the possible complications associated with chin surgery?

The operation does not carry any significant risks; care must simply be taken to avoid damaging the nerves that pass through this area and provide sensation to the lower lip.

A partial loss of sensation may occur, but this should resolve completely within a few days; only rarely does it persist for several weeks.

The body may react adversely to the implants; however, these are exceptional cases. We strive to minimise this risk even further by using modern implants that allow surrounding bone to grow into them, thereby becoming part of the bone tissue.

Another possible complication is post-operative bleeding. We prevent this by applying pressure to the site or, if necessary, administering anti-bleeding medication. Patients themselves can also reduce the risk of bleeding by strictly following the instructions before and after the procedure. We prevent potential infection by administering antibiotics and ensuring thorough oral hygiene.

Is the procedure painful?

Thanks to the anaesthetic, the procedure itself is painless. During the healing process, some swelling may occur and the area may be slightly tender. These symptoms are common and will subside within a few days.

Is there a visible scar after the procedure?

The procedure leaves a small scar of about 5 cm. However, as the incision is made beneath the edge of the chin, the scar is virtually invisible. Furthermore, once healed, its appearance can be improved using a laser, which will soften and smooth it out.

What is the difference between an implant and a surgical chin advancement?

We use both methods to augment the chin. The use of implants offers greater scope for shaping the chin. We therefore opt for implants particularly in cases where repositioning the patient’s own bone would be insufficient.

How long do the results of the operation last?

It depends on the specific procedure chosen. Changes made during chin contouring are permanent. The results of chin liposuction then depend on the elasticity of your skin and your ability to maintain a stable weight. However, even these results can be described as long-lasting; they can last for up to 10 years.
