Combining procedures
Eyelid surgery can be combined with other procedures, such as a brow and forehead lift. To determine the suitability of combining procedures, we recommend taking advantage of a free consultation with a doctor.

A consultation with a doctor is always required before the procedure, during which our clients are given a detailed explanation of how the procedure will be carried out and what to expect from it.

It is not recommended to take medicines containing acetylsalicylic acid for at least a week before the treatment, as these can reduce blood clotting. The doctor will always advise the patient precisely on what needs to be done based on their current state of health.

However, the suitability of the procedure is limited if:

• The area around the eyes shows signs of damage or redness.
• There is inflammation or infection.
• You are undergoing treatment for cancer, a thyroid condition or a disease of the internal organs.
• You are being treated for type II or type III diabetes.
• You have a blood clotting disorder.
• You suffer from increased intraocular pressure.
• You have high blood pressure.

It is always necessary to provide your doctor with accurate information about your health. If your doctor recommends it, you should expect to undergo a pre-operative examination. You will be informed of all this during your consultation.

The procedure is carried out on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia, analgosedation or general anaesthesia. This depends on the technique used.

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, can be performed surgically. This removes unsightly sagging skin.

A modern approach is the technique involving access via the conjunctiva. This focuses on the lower eyelids, the so-called bags under the eyes, where attention is paid mainly to subcutaneous fat and excess, sagging skin. With this method of treatment, you also avoid unnecessary scarring and bleeding.

First, the areas to be removed or adjusted are marked on the eyelids.

As standard, excess skin is surgically reduced (thereby eliminating the overhang), and the fat pockets at the inner corners are removed (the incision is made from the inner corner of the eye across the skin fold; for the lower eyelid, it is made just below the eyelashes); surgery on the lower eyelids is also carried out.

Upper and lower eyelid surgery takes about 1.5 hours.

The procedure for lower eyelid surgery via the conjunctiva is usually carried out under general anaesthesia or analgosedation lasting approximately half an hour.

Excess fatty tissue is removed via an incision through the conjunctival mucosa. No stitches are required here; an eye ointment is applied and the treated eye is covered with a special plaster.

Both upper and lower eyelid procedures can be carried out on the same day. However, for transconjunctival surgery performed under general anaesthesia, a one-day hospital stay is required. A companion is required after the operation.

The procedure is usually well tolerated, although swelling and minor bruising may occur afterwards. It is therefore advisable to apply ice to the area. Following a transconjunctival procedure, the treated areas are usually red; after the operation, the stitches are removed after approximately one week.

Restrictions include taking it easy and avoiding sport for at least 3 weeks.

During the first week following the procedure, we recommend avoiding straining your eyes – using a computer, watching television, reading in dim light, etc. Sunbathing and exposure to the sun are also not advisable during this time.

Your eyes may be more sensitive after the procedure, so we recommend wearing dark sunglasses for a few days and applying high-quality protective creams with a high UV protection factor; you may also need to use antiseptic eye drops for around 3 days.

Recovery after eyelid surgery depends on the patient’s ability to heal, strict adherence to post-operative instructions, and avoiding unnecessary strain on the eyes.

In the first few days after the procedure, it is advisable to sleep with your head elevated. A follow-up appointment is recommended after around 7 days, and it is also advisable to take sick leave for this period.

The final result becomes apparent approximately 1–3 months after the procedure, as recovery following the procedure gradually activates the regenerative processes in the eyelid skin.
