Vaginoplasty (also known as a ‘vaginal facelift’, or improvement of the appearance of the vaginal area) is becoming an increasingly popular procedure these days.

Just as you might have breast or nose surgery today, it is possible to very effectively reshape the vaginal opening or, if required, tighten the vagina as a whole. Vaginoplasty restores the vaginal structure, boosting self-confidence and rejuvenating the intimate areas.

Before the procedure

Vaginoplasty effectively corrects post-partum vaginal defects and the effects of natural ageing, helping women to improve their sex lives.

It is advisable to cut down on smoking before the procedure itself. The patient must be in good health and undergo a pre-operative examination.

For a woman who has given birth to undergo vaginoplasty, it is advisable to wait at least 6 months after the birth to allow the vaginal area to heal. Vaginoplasty is not recommended for pregnant women.

The procedure

Vaginoplasty is a procedure requiring general anaesthesia, including a 1–2-day hospital stay, or it can be performed under local anaesthesia. The procedure takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour.

First, any excess and unsightly scarring in the vaginal area resulting from childbirth is removed; the vaginal mucosa, including the muscle tissue, is then incised, tightened and sutured with absorbable stitches to ensure proper reconstruction and narrowing.

Once the anaesthetic has worn off – if the vaginoplasty was performed under local anaesthetic – the patient is discharged with post-operative instructions for home care.

In connection with surgery on intimate areas, women often also consider laser hair removal in the intimate area to ensure a completely perfect result.

Another relatively popular procedure at plastic surgery clinics is hymenoplasty, or reconstruction of the hymen.

Women also come for laser treatment to remove condylomas, or skin warts, in the intimate areas.

Every woman should look after her intimate areas just as she looks after and cleans her skin or other parts of her body, because they fulfil not only an aesthetic and health-related role but also a sexual one in life.

This is important. Ageing, childbirth and genetic predisposition can all significantly alter their appearance.

In the first few days, a woman may experience pain in the operated area and swelling; she may take painkillers and apply a cold compress or ice to the treated area. It is also important to maintain good intimate hygiene and wash with cold water several times a day.

It is also advisable to rest for around 10 days and avoid strenuous physical activity. Visiting swimming pools or saunas is not recommended, but we do recommend showering.

A follow-up appointment is recommended after roughly 2 weeks; by this time, the stitches have usually been absorbed. However, it is possible to return to work within a week.

Recovery may take up to 4 weeks, depending on individual circumstances and healing progress. Sexual intercourse is recommended only 4–6 weeks after the procedure to minimise the risk of infection.
