How can you treat a dry scalp? What are the causes and solutions?
Hair is a common concern for both sexes in their quest for the perfect look. Whilst the ideals of male and female beauty differ in many respects, there is unquestionable agreement on the need for beautiful, thick hair.
And, as is often the case, these ideals very often remain unfulfilled. How many people stand in front of the mirror every day, fretting over the imperfections of their hair! Could a dry scalp be to blame?

A dry scalp – what exactly is it?
Put simply: a dry scalp is skin that is not sufficiently moisturised. Because it is covered by hair, its condition isn’t immediately obvious to the eye, but it doesn’t look very healthy: red, scaly and flaky, much like heels or elbows can become when they aren’t looked after properly.
The main problem with a dry scalp, however, isn’t how it looks, but the fact that it itches uncomfortably. Is there anything that really works for a dry scalp?
How to get rid of an itchy scalp caused by dry scalp
As a general rule, whenever you have any problems with your hair or scalp, you should first focus on choosing the right hair care products, optimising your hair care routine and checking your intake of micronutrients in your diet. A healthy and radiant appearance is, of course, influenced by a balanced intake of all micronutrients, i.e. vitamins and minerals. That is why there are countless vitamin and mineral supplements for internal use. And, of course, there are also nourishing products designed specifically for application to the affected areas; for example, leave-in treatments. If you are experiencing a problem, it is worth trying all hair care products designed to alleviate dry scalp and related issues. As well as shampoos and conditioners, pay special attention to hair oils. These actually act as moisturisers. After using them, your hair won’t be greasy in a negative sense, but will have a lovely shine and smell wonderful. There’s no need to shy away from traditional home remedies aimed at improving the condition of your scalp. Whether you use herbs such as chamomile or nettles, or try oil, egg yolk or vinegar wraps, you may well find that some of these work. We’d just like to steer you away from wraps made from chicken droppings. You won’t be able to get rid of the resulting strong odour, even after washing your hair several times.
As is often the case, however, one problem rarely comes alone, and a problematic scalp often goes hand in hand with thinning hair and severe hair loss. If your scalp problem is more complex than just occasional itching, our hair clinic in Prague offers a comprehensive trichological examination to get to the root of your condition. Either we’ll be able to treat your scalp and stimulate hair growth, or we’ll offer you a hair transplant.

What causes a dry scalp
First and foremost, it is important to realise that the quality of a person’s hair is genetically determined. Quite simply, there are individuals with a pronounced predisposition to a dry scalp, brittle hair, split ends and hair loss. For these people, improper care and a disregard for healthy practices can cause immediate harm. What exactly are we talking about? Everyone feels better with freshly washed hair, as it looks nicer and smells fresher. However, there are two sides to every coin, and paradoxically, washing with water dries out the hair and scalp even more. One possible cause of a dry scalp may be a deficiency in vitamin A and zinc, as well as a lack of the much-talked-about Omega-3 fatty acids. You should therefore pay close attention to what you eat. In general, hair care products containing alcohol can exacerbate unwanted dryness; on an individual basis, however, anyone may find that a particular product does not suit them. This is not strictly an allergic reaction, but if you feel that your discomfort increases after using a particular product, stop using it. More sensitive hair does not like sudden changes in temperature. Avoid using excessively hot water, blow-drying and curling. Similarly, it is not advisable to step out of overheated rooms into the cold outdoor air without a hat. On the other hand, wearing hats for long periods can lead to the scalp becoming damp, which is also not good. There are many positive things to say about old age, though these do not apply to the physical body. This usually deteriorates more and more with the passage of time. The specific turning point that marks old age is individual, but inevitable.
The good news is that, thanks to modern medicine, we are now able to put a stop to the ageing of the scalp. Book an appointment with us for a consultation; we will identify the causes of your problems and, should a hair transplant be necessary, our price list is available for you to view.
How does a dry scalp manifest itself?
The main symptom is an itchy sensation. This leads to frequent scratching of the scalp, leaving small white flakes under the fingernails – sometimes mistaken for dandruff – but in reality, this is simply a layer of dry skin flaking off.
When combing or brushing your hair, you may notice a large amount of such ‘dandruff’; unfortunately, constantly picking at your scalp causes scabs to form and increases hair loss and impairs hair quality. The feeling of irritability caused by constant discomfort on the scalp is also significant.
Don’t risk this unflattering situation turning into something worse. Take advantage of the testimonials from our clients who already have experience with hair transplants, for example. Contact us; we’ll try to save the hair you still have, or we’ll provide you with new hair.
