How to deal with greasy hair? We know the causes and the solutions.

Are you troubled by limp hair that you have to wash almost every day? You’re certainly not alone. A whole quarter of the adult population struggles with this problem. In this post, we’d like to reveal how to deal with greasy hair, explain its causes and suggest possible solutions.

We’ll help you solve your hair and scalp problems – from a professional analysis right through to hair extensions. We’ll be happy to discuss the cost
of each treatment, the procedure involved and the possible results with you during a no-obligation consultation.

How to deal with oily hair? First, identify the cause.

The fact that your body produces an excessive amount of sebum may be due to genetic predisposition. In that case, you’ll be troubled by greasy, flat hair all year round, so it’s not just a temporary issue.

If this isn’t the case for you, you’ll need to look elsewhere for the cause. As well as your genes, the following also play an important role:

  • stress
  • an unhealthy diet
  • hormonal changes (particularly puberty and pregnancy)
  • stopping hormonal contraception
  • frequent wearing of head coverings
  • inappropriate hair care products
  • brushing and touching your hair too often
  • frequent blow-drying

What to avoid if you have hair that gets greasy quickly

As with oily skin, excessive sebum production is often a reaction to over-drying and harsh treatment. You should therefore try to adjust your lifestyle and the way you look after your hair.

  • Avoid blow-drying with hot air and frequently running your fingers through your hair.
  • Cut down on unhealthy food and avoid greasy, extremely sweet, salty and spicy dishes.
  • Rest and staying well-hydrated are important. Adequate hydration is reflected not only in a radiant complexion, but also in beautiful, healthy hair.

What works for greasy hair? Review your hair care routine.

Oily hair needs to be washed more often, but it’s extremely important that you do it properly.

  • It all starts with choosing the right shampoo. It should be suitable for frequent use and, ideally, natural, free from silicones and other potentially irritating substances.
  • As for the amount, just one teaspoonful is enough when washing.
  • Once you’ve worked it into a lather, rinse it out with lukewarm water – never hot.
  • Finally, you can rinse your hair with a cold rinse – this will close the pores on your scalp.

Are conditioners and styling products suitable for oily hair?

If your hair gets greasy quickly, the rule is ‘less is more’. However, you don’t have to avoid conditioners altogether. If you do use one, apply it only to the lengths of your hair, not to the roots. As for styling products, keep these to a minimum. Remember that you should apply no more than two hair products to your hair each day.

What helps with oily hair? Quick relief in the form of dry shampoos.

These are a really great help for anyone who struggles with greasy hair. As we’ve already mentioned, washing it too often isn’t the best idea. Applying dry shampoo can put off washing for a day or two. It’s very practical, works instantly and will save you both when travelling and on hectic mornings.

Give some old wives’ remedies a go. They really do work for greasy hair.

Herbs and certain foods can also help with hair that gets greasy quickly. Here are a few of them:

  • Stinging nettle

Many hairdressers recommend using nettle shampoo, although not for the long term. At home, you can prepare an infusion from the young parts of this plant and rinse your hair with it.

  • Kefir

Instead of hair masks, use plain kefir. Rub it into damp hair, leave it on for 30 minutes, then rinse.

  • Burdock

Prepare an infusion from the root and leave it on your hair and scalp for about 15 minutes. It soothes and nourishes the scalp, whilst improving the quality of your hair.

  • Sorrel

Prepare a sorrel hair rinse by adding two handfuls of sorrel leaves to a litre of boiling water and leaving it to steep, covered, for 15 minutes at a lower temperature. Rinse your hair with the infusion and do not rinse it out with water.

Thinning hair, receding hairline or bald patches on the crown – we can treat all of these at our clinic.
