Hairstyles for fine and thinning hair: We know how to make it look fuller
Are you one of those people whom nature hasn’t blessed with thick, full hair? Don’t despair. There are a few tricks you can use to at least make it look fuller. As well as suitable hairstyles for fine and thinning hair, the right styling techniques and carefully chosen hair care products can also help.
What’s causing your excessive hair loss or the deterioration in your hair’s quality? We’ll help you find out and find a solution.
Hairstyles for fine and thin hair – short or long?
Do you think that fine hair automatically means you’re stuck with short hairstyles? Wrong! You, too, can have long hair. Rather than focusing on length, concentrate on the precision of the cut. Bobs, medium-length layered bobs, long hair cut to a single length, or perhaps a rebellious pixie – these are the hairstyles that will suit you.
Haircuts for fine, short hair
- A bob or a shorter lob
An elegant bob or lob is a very good and strategic choice. Not only does this cut instantly add volume, it also looks very stylish and is quite versatile. Simply add gentle waves to complement a romantic outfit, or blow-dry it using a round brush for a more elegant look.
- Full pixie
A full pixie is a hairstyle that is usually short at the back and sides of the head and slightly longer on top, with very short fringe. For fine hair, the ideal style is one with minimal layering, which creates more volume. It’s extremely on-trend, has a cheeky look, and requires minimal styling and is low-maintenance.
Medium-length hairstyles for fine and thin hair
- Long lob or bob
Not keen on a sharply cut bob or layered long hair? Try a medium-length bob with subtle layering. This hairstyle is also quite versatile, and you can conjure up a more casual look simply by adding gentle waves.
Long hairstyles for fine hair
- Hair cut to a single length
It’s best to cut long hair to a single length. It will look fuller than if it were heavily layered. The hairstyle will also look neater than if the hair were too long and untamed.
Fringe for fine hair – yes or no?
If you’re feeling brave, thin and fine hair is certainly no obstacle to having a fringe. Once again, however, a perfect cut and proper maintenance are key. Bangs cut to a uniform medium length, or so-called ‘curtain bangs’, will look best. Always bear in mind the shape of your face, though, and don’t hesitate to ask your hairdresser for advice.

How to achieve more volume – what to do and what to avoid
1. Washing your hair
- DON’T: Washing your hair every day can generally do more harm than good. This is particularly true for those with thinning hair.
- YES: Use dry shampoo – it’ll help you go longer between washes without weighing your hair down! Look for a lightweight, talc-free formula.
2. Volume-boosting hair products
- NO: Too many volumising products can leave residue on your hair, making it look limp and/or greasy.
- YES: Choose a lightweight hair mousse to boost your hair’s volume and texture without weighing it down.
3. Blow-drying, straightening and curling
- NO: Don’t overdo it. Minimise heat styling, as fine strands can be particularly prone to heat damage and breakage.
- DO: Blow-dry your hair using a round brush. Try creating waves using alternative methods, such as plaiting your hair overnight or using foam rollers.
