How often should we wash our hair to actually help it?

How often to wash your hair? Is there a definitive answer to such a seemingly simple question? No. It all depends not only on your hair type but also on your lifestyle. When determining the frequency, you must also consider factors such as whether you exercise, live in a city, the environment in which you work, or how many styling products you use daily. In this post, we will advise you on how to appropriately set up your hair care routine.

How often to wash hair to avoid damage

We wash our hair to remove dust and dirt, sweat, and the oils produced by sebaceous glands. However, let’s pause for a moment on the last reason mentioned.

Oils are actually nutritious natural substances essential for healthy-looking hair. The key is to leave the right amount on your hair. However, if you wash your hair too frequently or use inappropriate harsh shampoos, the necessary oils will be lacking not only for your strands but also for your scalp. The result?

  • Brittle hair
  • Insufficient nourishment and hydration leading to hair loss
  • Dry and itchy scalp
  • Development of dandruff, bloody scabs, and risk of infection

What happens when you stop washing your hair completely?

Yes, excessive washing of hair is harmful. But permanently stopping washing it? That’s not a solution either.

  • Long-term absence of hair washing leads to the accumulation of bacteria and the development of unpleasant odors.
  • It can also lead to clogged hair follicles, resulting in a skin abscess condition.
  • Accumulated sebum or hair products create a barrier over the top layer of the skin, potentially causing ingrown hairs.
  • In rare cases, excessive sebum may harden over the hair follicles, causing blockage and inflammation. As a result, hair may fall out faster than it can grow back.

Washing hair every day? Yes, but...

Such a high frequency is not suitable for everyone. Experts and professional hairstylists agree that daily washing of hair is only appropriate for those who exercise daily. Those with oily hair will also need to wash it more frequently, but ideally not every day.

And what is the recommended frequency of washing hair according to their different types?

  • Normal to Firm

These can “mask” the accumulation of oil for a bit longer, so washing them once every 3-4 days is sufficient.

  • Curly and Wavy

This type of hair tends to dry out. Therefore, we recommend washing it once every 4-6 days with shampoos specifically designed for wavy or curly hair to enhance and define waves.

  • Dry and Damaged Hair

With a relatively low frequency, a maximum of twice a week is recommended for washing dry and damaged hair. Nourishing hair masks and oils, which should become a solid part of your hair care regimen, will help restore their condition.

  • Coarse to Thick Hair

Coarse and structured hair requires a lot of sebum to stay healthy and look good. Therefore, it is suitable to wash it only once a week.

  • Children’s Hair

In this case, it is also necessary to consider their type and the fact of how active the children are (sports, sweating). Generally, however, it is recommended to wash it 1-2 times a week.

Does improperly set hair washing affect male baldness?

Hair loss can be influenced by many factors. From the natural decline in testosterone levels to an unhealthy lifestyle and genetic predispositions. A particular chapter is the loss of hair due to illness, especially alopecia or during cancer treatment. In such cases, it is also possible to consider eyebrow and beard transplants, not just hair.

Excessive washing and the use of poor-quality products can certainly contribute to the deterioration of hair quality and their loss. However, we would not directly label this as a cause of baldness.
