Breast implants must be chosen with your body type in mind
Breast augmentation is a significant life decision for most women, one they often dream about for several years. Many patients arrive at the clinic with a very clear idea of what their future breasts should look like.
Choosing implants is a very personal matter, reflecting your wishes and expectations. A top plastic surgeon is fully aware of this and always strives to accommodate their patients’ wishes.
However, the choice itself is also influenced by a number of other factors that must be taken into account, not only for aesthetic reasons but also for health reasons.
The surgeon will guide you through the entire selection process, and together you will choose the most suitable size and shape.
The plastic surgeon will recommend the size and shape of the breast implants based on your body proportions:
- shoulder width,
- breast circumference and width,
- chest width and circumference,
- hip width.
In addition, they must also take into account the ratio between your waist and hips and measure the distance between your breasts. The doctor will also assess the shape and firmness of your breasts. If your breasts are sagging, a lift will probably also be necessary, as simply inserting implants would not be a sufficient solution. The final choice is also influenced by the amount of overlying skin, subcutaneous fat, the size of the glands and the condition of the muscles.

- Excessive size can pose a risk to your health. In such cases, breast hardening and the formation of fibrous pockets are more common. There may also be impaired healing of post-operative scars. Implants that are too heavy also put strain on the spine and can lead to chronic pain.

Classification of breast implants by type
Once the doctor has taken your measurements and listened to your wishes and requirements, they must select not only the appropriate size and shape but also the profile height, whilst also focusing on the gel’s cohesiveness and the type of surface.
The range of silicone implants has expanded to include new products over the last ten years. Manufacturers are introducing even safer options and also offer revolutionary lightweight implants. Thanks to the wide range of shapes and brands available, every woman can find the right choice, whatever her requirements.
You can choose between standard or lightweight breast implants
Implants can be divided into two basic groups according to the type of material from which they are made. Both types are completely safe and meet high EU standards. However, they differ in their properties.

Lightweight implants are up to 30 per cent lighter than standard types. Their interior consists of silicone interlaced with tiny air bubbles. This makes them lighter and also safer.

Surface
Breast implants can have a smooth or textured surface. Smooth surfaces carry a higher risk of capsular contracture. A textured surface helps to keep the implant in its original position. Implants with a microtextured surface (which adheres to the breast tissue) are the best choice.
What shapes do breast implants come in?
- Round breast implants have long been among the most popular. This shape creates a so-called ‘push-up’ effect in the upper half of the breasts. Their base is round. The bust has a natural shape when all factors (the patient’s body type, etc.) are taken into account. Conversely, an excessively large round implant on a slender figure will create the appearance of artificial breasts.
- Anatomical breast implants are the ideal choice for women with slightly sagging breasts that do not require reshaping. Doctors also choose them for patients with completely flat breasts. They have an oval base and are therefore fuller at the bottom. This makes them look very natural, as they more faithfully mimic the shape of real breasts.
- Teardrop-shaped breast implants (teardrops) represent a compromise between round and anatomical shapes. They have a round base but are fuller at the bottom, similar to the anatomical shape. At the same time, however, ‘teardrops’ can create a slight push-up effect at the top of the bust. Doctors most often recommend them to women with slight sagging who do not require contouring, as well as to clients who have a narrow chest and no natural base. Even in these cases, a natural-looking result can be achieved with teardrop-shaped implants.
Breast implants – sizes
Bra sizes are usually denoted by the letters A, B, C, D and so on. The size or volume of implants is given in millilitres (ml), with 150 ml representing approximately one bra size.
To give you a better idea, here is a practical example: a surgeon might recommend augmentation with 300 ml implants for a woman who has previously worn an A cup. As a result, her bust size will increase by two sizes. She will therefore now wear a bra with a C cup.
In some cases, the surgeon may opt for a slightly larger size than originally intended. There is no need to worry; an extra 50 ml is not a huge difference, but it is enough to make the final result look more natural.
The chosen shape and profile also influence the new bra size
The profile refers to the height of the implant. It can be low, medium, high or extremely high. By choosing the right profile, the surgeon can achieve a fuller décolletage. For example, if you only want a slight increase in breast size but still wish to achieve the effect of a full décolletage, the surgeon will recommend a small volume with a high profile.

The cost of breast augmentation depends on the type of implant you choose and whether reshaping is also required. Standard implants are generally cheaper than lighter ones. Other factors that determine the final price include the shape and, last but not least, the brand.

How long do breast implants last?
Modern technology improves safety and durability, but breast implants do not last a lifetime. Every woman has a different body type and skin structure. She also has a different lifestyle. The interval between replacements is therefore influenced by a number of external and internal factors. Generally, however, it is recommended to have a revision operation after 10 to 16 years.
The doctor must check the condition of the silicone (by carrying out an ultrasound scan). If the implant is in good condition and the patient is satisfied with its current state and has no complaints, the replacement may be postponed.
When should breast augmentation be carried out after childbirth?
Young mothers are often unhappy with the condition of their breasts after pregnancy and during the breastfeeding period. Significant weight gain and loss in quick succession can have a negative impact on the appearance of the breasts. The breasts are most commonly saggy and lacking in volume.
We recommend postponing breast augmentation after childbirth until you have finished breastfeeding (6 to 12 months).
Men can also undergo breast surgery
Gynecomastia in men is characterised by an enlargement of the mammary glands. It can be treated in two ways: through hormonal therapy or plastic surgery.
