Breast reduction, also known as a reductive procedure for excessive breasts, addresses not only aesthetic but often more importantly, health issues. Large breasts frequently result in poor posture and physical strain, spinal problems (including cervical, thoracic, and lumbar issues), leading to frequent headaches. They can sometimes affect breathing and cause swelling in the legs, impacting not only health but also the mental well-being of a woman.
Breast reduction, or the surgical modification of excessively large breasts, addresses not only aesthetic concerns and issues with choosing appropriate lingerie and swimwear, but in many cases, it is primarily a health issue. For ages, women’s breasts have been a symbol of feminine beauty. Often, women are dissatisfied with them, primarily due to size, and undergo breast augmentation surgery. Conversely, there are women who struggle with heavy or misshapen breasts as a result of significant weight loss, multiple pregnancies, or genetic predispositions; aging and loss of elasticity can also lead to significant breast sagging. Breast reduction is often sought by young women who experience large breasts due to excessive breast tissue development, which can be bothersome during activities such as sports, or create disproportionate body symmetry.
Breast reduction effectively removes and reduces excess skin, breast, and adipose tissue in the breast area. The procedure includes shaping the remaining breast volume. In several cases, breast reduction has a preventive nature, eliminating the development of many health complications.
Large breasts often cause poor posture and strain on the body, leading to spinal issues (including cervical, thoracic, and lumbar problems) such as curvature, and thus frequent headaches; they can sometimes affect breathing and cause swollen legs, which impacts not only health but also a woman’s mental well-being. The area under large breasts (the grooves under the breasts) is also prone to the development of inflammatory processes, infections, or eczema. However, all of these problems and improvements in quality of life can only occur after breast reduction.
Breast reduction is performed on adult patients; exceptionally, if there is a risk of serious health issues, the procedure can be performed on younger individuals as well.

At Premier Clinic, we only have premium equipment. We are the only clinic in the Czech Republic to use unique German anesthesiology units that allow for fully digital administration of anesthesia. All our anesthesias are performed as so-called low-flow anesthesias with premium anesthetic gas. This makes waking up easier for the client and practically eliminates the unpleasant effects of anesthesia.
Breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia and lasts approximately 2–3 hours. Incisions are made in predetermined and pre-drawn areas; during the procedure, excess sagging skin, excess adipose tissue, and a portion of the breast gland are removed. The breasts are reshaped, the nipple-areola complex is repositioned, resized if necessary, and then all incisions are surgically closed with internal absorbable stitches. These stitches also help strengthen the scar to ensure proper healing.
Breast reduction is carried out such that the incisions intersect the area around the areola, continue from the center of the areola downwards, and form a small segment under the breasts, resembling an anchor, always ensuring that the scars are as minimally visible as possible. Drains are placed in the operated area, which function for better drainage of blood and tissue secretions for 24–48 hours; they also serve as a supportive tool for faster healing and help eliminate inflammatory processes, among other benefits. The treated area is disinfected and covered with sterile absorbent gauze. After the breast reduction procedure, the patient is hospitalized with an elastic bandage or compression garment around the chest for 1–2 days as needed, after which the drains are removed, and the patient leaves with instructions from the doctor for home care.

Breast reduction is classified as an invasive surgical procedure, and it requires the patient to be in good health. A preoperative examination is also necessary for breast reduction; for older patients, a mammogram or ultrasound (sono) examination of the breasts is recommended as well. We advise stopping medications that may increase bleeding (medications containing acetylsalicylic acid) approximately 2–3 weeks before the procedure. It is also advisable to limit smoking both before and after the procedure.
Breast reduction is often performed on women who have breastfed, approximately 6 months after cessation.
After breast reduction surgery, the treated areas may exhibit pain, swelling, and bruising, which will subside within a few days. Breast reduction requires a 1-2 day hospitalization, after which the drains are removed, and the patient goes home wearing compression underwear, returning for dressings as per the agreement with the doctor. Postoperative care is important for breast reduction, including a 2-week rest period in occupational incapacity and wearing elastic garments for about 2 months. Wearing these helps to eliminate swelling, contributes to the shaping of the breasts, and aids in better healing. All stitches are absorbable, thus eliminating the need for removal. To reduce scarring, it is advisable to incorporate gentle pressure massages and apply quality moisturizing creams about 14 days post-surgery. Scars, if they remain, will fade within six months. Excessive physical strain is not recommended for 2 months after the procedure, and showering is preferable for hygiene.
The resulting effect is long-lasting, but it also depends on the quality and elasticity of the skin, individual healing ability, and proper adherence to postoperative care. If a stable weight is maintained, there is no need to repeat the procedure.
Women over 35 are advised to have regular preventive mammographic check-ups.
Women’s breasts are and will be under scrutiny by all of us. It is the most discussed topic concerning aesthetics and beauty. Those with small breasts want larger ones, while those with large breasts desire smaller ones. It is the same as a person being 160 cm tall but secretly wishing to be 190 cm, or vice versa. However, it is always important to consider what is health-promoting for each woman and in what she will feel satisfied. Your decision is solely yours, whether for aesthetic or health reasons. Do not forget to also prioritize a healthy lifestyle and positive thinking.
